In the home, it takes merely a switch of a dial to turn the air conditioning on, and an occasional trip to the basement to change the air filter.

    Such reactions to the subject of air conditioning would seem to make sense, if air conditioning were only a means of refrigeration of the air to make people comfortable. But A/C is more, and to understand it, we must begin with a definition of air conditioning.
